Minutes for Meeting: Meeting (Project Success) Jan 19, 2010

Project Success Meeting Minutes
January 19th, 2010

Those present: Shirley DeCorte, Michelle Christensen, Valerie La Berge, Angela Allen-Peck, Marsha Sommers, Genevieve Wilson, Marta Dunne, and Jason Nicol.
Introductions made.

Library: Valerie La Berge will go to all 3 elementary schools in order to talk about the Monarch Book Awards. Also, attendance seems to be increasing during preschool story time. She hopes this is due to a survey done of the students asking what topics they would be interested in and has then made schedule adjustments based on the results. She shared with the group the upcoming library events.

Literacy Project:  Michelle brought 3 options to communicate the results of last year’s survey results for display into the community.

YMCA: Genevieve reported that the YMCA is trying to be mindful of families who may be struggling during the current economy. They are trying to offer multiple child discounts to families that enroll in summer camps and after school care. They will have a “Casino Night” fundraiser on February 27, 2010. All are welcome to attend!

KEYS Report: Marsha commented on the presentation that Mary Hess did for the Sandwich School District at the In Service Day on January 4, 2010.

Hispanic Coalition:   Marta reported she is working with the Mexican Embassy to provide funding for workshops, education classes, and to help with integration into the community. They are in need of a location to hold the meetings. There are online classes available as well.

Marta discussed the homework club which is no longer meeting due to the amount of extra work that it took to coordinate it and lack of funding. She would like to see it come back in some form with others taking responsibility of running the program. In the past, both the United Church and the YMCA have been helpful with travel and location needs.

She would like to coordinate this year’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration with the Latino Action Group in DeKalb. Michelle informed us that Zandra Garcia heads the Latino Action Group. Michelle will pass Marta’s contact information along to her.

Centennial Counseling: Angela Allen-Peck reported that they have expanded into Yorkville and the number of interns serving students in the schools. There are 5 or 6 serving in  Somonauk. They are continuing to provide free services in the schools, including testing for learning disabilities. She also mentioned their therapists have received training in play therapy.

YSB Report:  Jason reported that the LAN monies have been received totaling $7,700. These funds, already allocated, are for students at-risk of school failure through the WRAP plans. They are awaiting additional funds that should bring the total to about $32,000.

Jason discussed the desire to volunteer more in the community for day long events. Shirley suggested the Sandwich Education Foundation, and Valerie suggested looking for opportunities at the Disney web site.

Groups currently meeting (or starting soon) includes the following: Active Parenting of Teens, META (dealing with emotions), and Girls Empowerment Groups (which has a waiting list).

Parent Education: Marsha shared photos of the most recent Family Fun Night put on in conjunction with 4-C’s. Due to state budget issues, there will be no more funds available for the rest of the year.

4-C:  No one present to report.

Ben Gordon Center: Michelle reiterated that the website should up and running within the next couple of weeks. The minutes will be available for viewing along with upcoming events. She asked the group to review the materials brought for any changes needed.

Girl Scouts: No one present to report.

DeKalb County Community Foundation:  No one present to report.

New Business:  Shirley commented to all those present to continue to invite other members of the community who would be a good addition to Project Success.
