DCP/SAFE Updates:

T-shirts:
There is going to be a t-shirt contest for this year’s DCP/SAFE t-shirt. All DCP/SAFE students are welcome to submit their ideas. The designs may still be submitted to Kathy Hicks by the March meeting either by email (kathyh@bengordoncenter.org) or students may bring them to our meeting. This will be the last opportunity for submissions. The best design will be used for the shirts. At the next meeting, we will discuss the color and sizes.

Fun Night Event:
Due to the conflicts of schedules between the schools, we will be canceling the fun night for this year. At our first meeting next year, we will start planning a fun night for the fall.

Public Policy:
Everyone that wants to talk public policy can still talk to Michelle Christensen.

Public policy refers to a new opportunity for students to get involved with their communities through changing public policy. Michelle is going to lead students in researching the current policies – looking to see if they are outdated, do not fit the area, etc. The students will then work together to bring about change within that policy and their communities. If anyone is interested in getting involved, they should contact Michelle by email (michelle@bengordoncenter.org).

Children’s Advocacy Center/Champions 4 Children Walk:
The Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) of Illinois is hosting a walk to raise money for their organization. CAC works with children who have been through a trauma and are in great need of supplies. The five mile walk is to be held in May, and they are still working on getting a location for it. More information is to come. They are asking that individuals try to raise $150 to $200 to support this great cause. Gil is challenging the schools to compete against each other, and the school that raises the most money will receive a $100 donation from Gil himself. The money that is raised will go towards purchasing the equipment that CAC needs in order to help children who have been physically or sexually abused. Schools need to be gathering individuals who want to participate and raise money.

Enough is Enough Campaign: This campaign started out of the Virginia Tech shooting, and its purpose is to stop violence. The Prevention Team will be coming to your schools (both middle and high) during lunch hours to have students sign pledges and write their names in a hand that will be displayed at the Hands around the Courthouse and at the Enough is Enough event in April. The Prevention Team has offered this campaign to the high school students as a project to get involved with by going into the elementary schools in their communities. The team will provide all the needed supplies, but it would be up to the students to talk to the children about the campaign. For those in the Sandwich, Hiawatha, and Indian Creek schools, if you’d like to do your high school or middle school too that’s fine. Just let us know that when you contact us for the information and supplies. Information will be sent via email to DHS, Sandwich, and Hiawatha. Any other interested schools, please contact Angel Hernandez at angel@bengordoncenter.org .

Break up into small groups.

Lunch.

SCHOOLS REPORTED OUT:
Michelle asked that the individual schools comment on what the clubs were working on.

Indian Creek – They participated in Violence Prevention Week by hanging ribbons on the lockers around school. Projects that they are working on include seat belt checks and DUI simulations for prom.

DeKalb – They are interested in helping out at elementary schools and distributing the hands.

Genoa-Kingston – G-K is planning a DUI simulation and a seatbelt check at their school. They are going to stand outside school and watch for people wearing their seatbelts. Those who are wearing the seatbelt will be rewarded with candy.

H-BR – They are planning a dance for the middle school.

Hiawatha – The projects that Hiawatha is working on include: a “Don’t Get Baked” Bake Sale, Enough is Enough hands for the elementary schools, and walk at school to raise money for a cancer society.

Sycamore – Sycamore wants to conduct their own surveys to see if they will get different results than the end of the year survey that DCP/SAFE administers. They also want to have a “Don’t Get Baked” Bake Sale and go laser tagging.

SandwichLast month, they had the bus safety event which went over very well. They are working on applying for grant money in order to pay for a speaker for the Truancy Night. Tasha Beckwood contacted them to organize a dinner for truancy students from all schools in the region. They will be serving dinner to the students and will need help from the rest of the Sports/Ed schools because they are planning for over 200 people in attendance. Sandwich would also like to help with the Enough is Enough hands in the elementary schools.

The final announcements:

  • Strategic Planning will not be done as an Ed/Sports Group (as talked about at the meeting). Mary Hess, will instead be contacting each school to do their individual Strategic Planning. She will hopefully be in contact with everyone before the next meeting.

  • High school group from the Philippines will come to the last meeting of the year at Indian Creek. We will still do the senior awards and eat lunch. We have asked that they come at 1:00 or shortly after.

  • Ben Mueller, the advisor from Hinckley-Big Rock, is working on an activity for everyone to participate in at the beginning of the next meeting.

  • The DCP/SAFE website is up and running, Michelle passed out postcards for each of the advisors that had our web address on it. The website can be found at: www.dcpsafe.org

Next meeting will be March 19, 2010 at Harvest Chapel Assembly of God Church, 725 County Line Road, Sandwich

Respectfully Submitted,
Jacque Norris
